Album Cover: Progress

We started to make some more designs to finally come up with a final album front cover design. We quite liked the image we took below because it was fun and the band looks approachable, so we used it in some of our album cover experiments.

We created two main designs. The brown design was inspired from our initial designs, which took very little time to create. The second, blue and white design was created because we wanted to try a different colour scheme, of blues, greys and white. We also tried to move the text into the empty space, rather than on top of the image, to try and fill the space around the image a bit more.

We then gathered a group of people together who were within our target audience (indie fans) and asked them which cover they preferred and what they would change about it.

The majority liked the blue design. They said that they disliked the photograph we used as it didn't look like a real band. They also said that the text was not visible enough because it was white.

From those useful comments, we ended up using a more professional and less casual, but still approachable, image of the band. We still want to use the previous image but probably on a different platform like the website or the inside or back of the digipack. We also added a blue drop shadow to the title to make it stand out in comparison to the background. Lastly, we changed the composition slightly by moving the text to the top, because we thought that it looked a bit like a calendar or a polaroid picture.

The same group was asked again what they thought of the cover. They said that it was an improvement from the previous design. However they did not like the drop shadow. They liked the way it made the text stand out but it looked unprofessional.

We agreed with their comments and thought we could use a texture rather than a block colour, which may make it more subtle.

We did this by adding a clipping mask over the shadow of the text.

From this the target audience group and our group all agreed on the image below:

Now we can think about designing the back and inside covers of the digipack, now that we have a colour scheme and theme to go on.
